Maps With Me (Useful travel phone app)
« on: Nov 21, 12, 11:31 PM »
For travellers who carry smartphones, a great app I use is Maps With Me. It's a map app with GPS that works OFFLINE.

Downloading it to have a try-out. Faced this problem many times. In a foreign place. No maps, and no internet access. I wonder how detailed the maps are... does it require one to pre-load the area of interest?

I installed the app on my Android phone. Am I impressed! I answer my questions here. Yes, pre-download is necessary. The listing has countries, so if you are visiting Finland, select to pre-download Finland before you lose internet access. Maps are detailed and accurate, if Singapore and Johor Bahru maps are good benchmarks. There is zoom and pan, and you can navigate from Singapore to Johor Bahru if you have both maps downloaded. You can select to delete maps you do not longer need, to conserve memory.

Glad to share. I found it so useful that I got the paid Pro version. That one allows you to orientate the map to the direction you are currently facing, and also has a search function for landmarks.

They also update the app frequently so expect new addons.

I think Google Maps has more detail but MapsWithMe is more useful because of its offline use capability.
