One of the most memorable moments during my photography trip to Japan, are photographing these wonderfully intelligent Snow Monkeys.
Here are the behaviors observed which I thought was incredibly human :

1. Soaking up in hot spring (also known as onsen) in groups, during cold winter to keep warm
2. The look on their red faces and the posture of their body as they enjoy the onsen

I am going to Nagano, Shiga Kogen and Shibu Onsen over the Xmas/New Year period.

Any tips and hints? :D

just back from seeing the snow monkeys. was a great experience witnessing the 'monkey' hierarchy you mentioned. naturally my photos don't measure up :)

would highly recommend it, even to non-animal lovers. the monkeys are non-aggressive towards people, in fact most are nonchalant to cameras only a few inches from their faces!

Just came back too. Great experience.
The monkeys are really nonchalant about humans.
