Food you dislike from another country

One man's meat is another man's poison.

Let's try and list out the 'memorable' food (that the locals are so proud of) but made you turn green / blue / purple / red in your face and want to go ptyui. 

Rule is that you must have at least tried it (or the edge of it).

I'll list some to get the ball rolling...

1) Injera and the assorted wats from Ethiopia.  Cannot.  Very cannot.

2) Feijoada from Brazil.  Not a fan of beans, much less black beans stewed in murky dark sauce with unrecognizable body parts.  For the record, I ate 2 beans.

3) Acaraje from Salvador, Brazil.  A salted 'muffin' with beans, onions, dried shrimp, pepper, nuts, etc... fried permanently in dende oil (palm oil).  Your ticket to heaven via heart-attack.

For me:

1) Salted seal meat in Greenland: Very rubbery.  I suspect a Chinese chef could change my opinion:)

2) Fermented shark meat cured for 1 year under sand.  Tried this in an Icelandic restaurant.  No comments:)

3) Fermented horse milk in Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Disgusting is the word.

4) Agree with Trisha.  I can't stand authentic injera from Ethiopia and Eritrea which is made from the tef plant found in the region.  However, I love the injera made in London and Washington DC which is made from rice or flour - they are delicious!

top of list for me is:

1. most mexican dishes... tacos, fajitas, whatever. they all taste quite the same. and beans... beans beans... baked, refried, mashed, etc. got sick on my flight back from MEX > SIN thanks to beans.

2. injera... a close runner up. 2x of those on my 1st and 2nd day in ethiopia was enough for me. and yes, weecheng, agreed that the ones in nyc were much more palatable. always substituted it for dabbo (bread) or just ate lots of pasta. injera + water is not a very good idea. they stuff you up really quick, as they're spongy. the wats (gravies, sauces whatever) are delicious! doro wat, shiro wat, lega tibs... kitfo!

3. mamaliga in romania. it's a staple in romanian dishes. i don't mind mamaliga so much if it's drenched in sour cream...

4. fufu (or foutou) in west africa. ghana, cote d'ivoire, burkina faso... ball of dough you use to pick up the meats and sauces with. it's like plasticine.
Half the fun of travel is the esthetic of lostness...

@kolya:  Hahaaa...  I felt quite the same way too!  Was just sharing with a few of the sgtravelcafe folks just last week, though it does not perhaps rank tops for me, hahaaa...  Allow me to give you the whole enchilada...

Enchiladas, gorditas, quesadillas, tlayudas, entomatadas, tamales, tostadas, chilaquiles, tacos, burritas, sincronizadas, papadzules...  whatever whatever whatever...

And they are...

Tortilla, folded with fillings.
Tortilla, rolled with fillings.
Tortilla, pan-fried.
Tortilla, pan-fried, greenish-black and gross-looking.
Tortilla, folded and sealed at the sides.
Tortilla, steamed with fillings.
Tortilla, crisp and open like a pizza.
Tortilla, small and round, order of 4.
Tortilla, folded, covered with cheese.
Tortilla, with eggs on top and served with tomato-chilli sauce.
Tortilla, with eggs at the bottom and served with tomato-chilli sauce.
Tortilla, folded in triplets, covered in 'salsa rojo' (red sauce).
Tortilla, folded in triplets, covered in 'salsa verde' (green sauce).
Tortilla, folded in triplets, covered in 'mole' (chocolate-chilli sauce).
Tortilla, but stuffed with eyes, tongue, brain...


A bit sad to discover you don't quite like the country's national food and you are surrounded by them all the time, hahaa...  I was thoroughly bewildered but finally coped by eating only tacos because the proportion of corn-to-meat is relatively smaller compared to the others, and so somehow, I could stomach tacos better... though I must say a lot of the fillings dripped to the ground and messily all over my fingers as well, as I don't know how to eat like the Mexicans.

@weecheng:  Aiyo!  As it is, I can't stand the globelization of McDonald's Land all over the world.  You want to make the whole world like 'Chifas'??? 

Seal meat sauteed in oyster sauce and chopped chives, anyone?  Sweet and sour seal meat...  Braised seal meat with century eggs...   Double-boiled seal meat soup...   :o

Mare's milk was OK for me.  Drank it like water in Mongolia.  Not my fave, but I thought the Mongolian food was worse, so the mare's milk actually helped me wash the food down.   8)

Looks like I dislike most of the things you dislike too.  I cannot stand mamaliga and fufu.  I absolutely cannot stomach fufu!  I was given huge lumps of it in Ghana and left it almost intact. From then on, I avoided it at all costs.  Always asked for rice for the rest of my journey in West Africa.

I actually quite like Mongolian mutton but was a little tired after one week though...

@ kolya and aycanela : Mexican food ! I absolutely loved it ! All those stews, and so many different mole's. Alll the local specialities and snacks. No need to overdose on beans and tortilla's.

@lion: Yeah, the other Mexican snacks are lovely, aren't they?  That's why we only mentioned tortillas and beans.  I quite like chicharron (with chili and lime sauce), guacamole anything (esp if it is a bit spicy), cocteles de camarones, nopales (cactus).


I just got reminded of another food item I... ahem... didn't like...

4) Cuba - the item was labelled as 'hamburgesa' and it cost 4 pesos (which was approx US$0.15 at that time).  Between the 2 'rocks' the Cubans mistake as bread, there was something.  The question wasn't... "What meat is this?".  It was "What is this?"  Looked like a thick piece of dry multi-layered cardboard.  And I ate it!!!!!!!!!!!!  When you are hungry in Cuba, you eat.

1)chapati, 2nd day in pakistan and i was wondering: oh dear, i have to have that for another 21 days.

2) saltish chai.some families add salt in their chai, tried that the 1st time in phander valley. had to try my very best to finish the cup of chai and refrain from showing a weird expression on my face.

Sorry, but I hate dal bhaat, and most indian vegetarian food. I nearly starved to death when I was in those indian holy towns in Utaranchal.

I kinda love dal bhaat thou when I was trekking in the Annapurnas in Nepal. Provides the most energy and usually eat till you full since they will top up free for you haha...

When I was trekking in Nepal, I alternated between maggi mee soup with egg and french fries with egg. No dal bhaat or boiled potatos with indian spices for me! Ya I am a spoilt Singaporean :P

In India
I am quite sick of northern india food, there is no variety in the northern india restaurants, always the same mughal  food or chindian food in the menu
dal tarka, chapati, naan, roti. tandoori, veg manchurian etc etc

but not sick the street snacks like various chaats like raj puri, panni puri, and momos (steamed dumplings)

thankfully, i developed a taste for saltish chai, and saltish butter tea,
just not saltish goat milk butter tea.
really hate the smell of mutton, goat, imagine drinking goat milk butter tea which is salted urgh!

Central America
really sick of the tortillas and rice, everywhere i go, its beans, rice, tortillas, or in special days, fried chicken, beans rice, tortillas.
- although I still love the south mexican version of cerviche! can't get even of them, fish cerviche, prawn cerviches! yum.

A general impression that i've had for years, is that travellers that spend the absolute minimum on food, always complain about the local food, where ever they go ...
